S-D taking bids on office building

Bids received for the sale of Sunman-Dearborn Community School Corporation's former administration building will be opened at a special meeting and work session Tuesday, May 22.

The Jackson Township building has been empty since June 2010, when the administrative offices were moved into East Central High School as a cost-cutting measure.

In April, the board discussed selling the building or transferring its ownership to Dearborn County for highway department and sheriff's department use. With a four to three ratio, the board directed S-D Support Services Director Tom Harris and board attorney Frank Kramer to work with county officials and report the results to the board.

Meanwhile, however, someone expressed interest in purchasing the property, Harris told the board at its regular May meeting. Board member Cindie Fox then made a successful motion to accept sealed bids for the building.

Proceeds from a sale would go toward the corporation's debt service and not into the general fund, said S-D Superintendent Jeff Hendrix.

Zoned agricultural, the building was appraised at $125,000 in June 2011, Harris said previously. Realtors, however, advised him the site would sell for far less.

The property is located at 26022 Lawrenceville Road.

Tuesday's meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. in the East Central High School library, 1 Trojan Road, St. Leon. A work session on strategic planning will follow the bid opening.
